Warning: spider in one pic
The downy woodpecker family joined us for dinner tonight! They were visiting our feeders while we were eating on the deck just a few feet away. Seeing them so close, I realized that mama has worn her tail feathers down to the spines! She's also quite scruffy looking; must be ready to molt very soon.
Here's baby's shorter but complete tail for comparison.
The spider was serendipitous-- I didn't see it until I downloaded the pics.
This was taken at dusk, which muted the orange fur-- but oh those green eyes!
