Miniature landscape-- those are tiny cedar cones, about the size of a grain of wheat, on a bed of moss and lichens.

The woods are full of lovely moss-covered stumps.

Everything's amazingly green, after a particularly long Indian summer.

Terrible light, but I love the "geese this way, mergansers that way" look.

Loons are very territorial during the summer, almost never more than one pair per pond... but come fall they gather together on the largest lakes and migrate together. I saw at least 11 during this walk.
