My family dubbed me “Captain Ahab” the first time I stumped across the hardwood floor in my boot. Then it developed a bit of a pop-squeak-thump, and I became “Captain Ahab and her Mariachi Band.”

Went to the grocery yesterday, did okay, appreciated the help out to the car (which they still provide even for the able-bodied)... and then realized there was no one at home to help me carry stuff into the house (and the kitchen is up a half flight of stairs). Did some careful repacking and carried in only the stuff that needed refrigeration.

Had my dental checkup today. The aide went to the desk and made my 6-month appointment for me so that I wouldn’t have to stand and wait for the receptionist; and then walked all the way to the street entrance opening doors for me.

Skipped choir last night. I had urged the directors to move rehearsals to the sanctuary last year, for the sake of several elderly members who have trouble with the enormous flight of stairs to the basement. They said then that it was just too inconvenient to carry all the music upstairs, and apparently still feel the same way now. Grrrr.

I keep thinking that my foot is getting better wonderfully fast.. and then, a few hours later, find myself counting the minutes until the next dose of painkillers. It *is* healing fast, just not miraculously quickly. The boot feels wonderful.. it’s so nice to be able to move around with little pain, and no worry that I’ll reinjure the sprain.

I posted to my organists’ mailing list, explaining my dilemma and asking if anyone could recommend really worthwhile manuals-only organ music. I got a number of general laundry-lists of basic repertoire for manuals; several specific recommendations, which look very helpful; a lecture from an organist/doctor who wanted to make sure I’m getting proper treatment and following doctor’s orders; and a note from a sales rep for an electronic organ company, who offered me a free download of a book of manuals-only music that they supply to sales reps and customers. It looks wonderfully helpful, and of course he has now guaranteed that, when the time comes to replace the aging organ I now play, I’ll at least talk to his company.
