On the other hand, I couldn’t before I broke the ankle, anyway.

Physical therapy evaluation and second visit to the podiatrist both went well; I’m feeling relieved, encouraged, and best of all, more comfortably physically. Both therapist and podiatrist think that most of the pain at this point is from the damaged muscles and ligaments, not the fracture. The therapist encouraged me to get out of the boot when I’m not walking, do lots of stretching and some simple non-weight-bearing strengthening exercises. I’m also to continue to elevate the leg a lot, and have a complicated hot-and-cold-water procedure to do; weird and time consuming but it feels great.

The therapist warned me to resign myself to another month in the boot-- so I was rather stunned when the podiatrist, after looking at the new x-rays, told me to start weaning myself off it. I can start walking around the house without it, with an Ace bandage; I can do weight-bearing exercises at therapy; and when the therapist and I agree, I can give the boot up entirely, preferably within the next six weeks (switching to an Ace bandage at least until I see him again).

Best of all... I can play the pedals again! With an Ace bandage at first, just to keep me from being too enthusiastic and over-stretching all those poor weak ligaments. I can hardly wait to go practice tomorrow.

P.S. Does anybody know where I put all my left shoes? Ooops!
