Odds & Ends
Jan. 19th, 2003 04:41 pmWent down to South Bend for dinner yesterday. As we approached the restaurant, we saw lots of flashers, heard sirens. Thankfully, our destination was fine... but the roof of the Burger King across the street was on fire. We watched the firefighters with interest as we parked and walked inside; and as we passed one group of onlookers, I couldn’t resist commenting that “they take their flame-broiling way too seriously!” (No one was hurt, only moderate damage to the building.)
Whisper and the kidlet are back in training now. Whisper looks good-- out of shape, but no lasting effects from the injury. As soon as we figured out what had happened, the trainer spread sand in the paddocks to improve the footing so that no other horses would get injured-- and we haven’t been billed for the vet visit yet, I’m wondering if the trainer picked that up.
My ankle is enough better that I was able to go out to the paddock after the horse (the sand helps my footing, too!), and then carry around trotting poles before and after the kidlet’s workout, without any horrible aftereffects. It’s still painful, but the pain is as much muscles and tendons reacting to being worked hard as it is pain where the break and sprains actually were. I’m starting to believe the doctor might be right about being out of pain in a few more months.
Kidlet got a letter yesterday that begins “Welcome to Lake Michigan College!” She’s staying local for another year, but it still represents changes. Possibly the biggest challenge will be seeing if we can still get by on two cars; we’ll have to do some creative sharing to make that work.
And finally, I play lots better when my blood sugar isn’t so low that I can’t see the music between the gray areas in my vision. Final postlude this morning was NOT fun, though I didn’t lose it until the last 30 seconds or so. (We were out of milk, so I didn’t have my usual cocoa; next time I’ll have to substitute some other protein, rather than the granola bars I munched today.)
