Just when I’m starting to get things together, everything falls apart. My kid is sick, her horse is lame, and I’ve broken a tooth. (Kid has a cold, just bad enough to keep her home; horse is recovering but I wish we could find the root cause; tooth isn’t painful, dentist can see me tomorrow, but it’s going to be either a crown or a root canal.)

On the good side, practice was okay; I chose two (of three) pieces for next Sunday, a few others for coming weeks, and even found a Bach toccata that will be perfect for the pastor’s last Sunday.

I also got a glimpse of my church’s history. Hubby’s watch needed a battery, and it’s one of those that is so difficult to work with that it’s easiest to take it to a watch repairman. The local clock and watch repair shop is in the original Methodist church. They also sell antique clocks, so the old sanctuary is open as their showroom. There’s not really a lot to see, other than the general shape of the room and just a bit of stained glass, but it was fun.

Fifty years ago, when the folk at that church decided to build a new church, the conference wouldn’t back their loan, and no bank would make the loan to the church-- so six men of the congregation personally co-signed the loan, risking their own property. They are still heroes of the church. Now I understand why, since that old building can’t possibly have supported a congregation of more than 150 (if they had two services!) and the sanctuary they build is big (seats 350). They were depending on relatively few people to make big mortgage payments. Something worth remembering as the church is contemplating a new building project within the next few years (their [our?] third since the 'new' sanctuary).
