I timed my walk carefully this evening, so that I could walk a couple of fast miles, then spend 20 minutes or so before sunset at the spot where there’s been a heron every day for the last two weeks, then a bit more slow walking.

The fast walk was fine, and I settled on the rocks to wait for the heron. Naturally I saw nothing but a couple of ducks and a flock of pigeons. Finally, as the light began to fade, I set off on that final stroll. As I turned a corner of the park road, I thought I saw dogs ahead with no owners in sight-- then did a double-take and realized that there were six or seven deer grazing among the trees ahead. I got within about 50 feet, snapping pictures all the way, before they bolted for the woods-- hope there was enough light left!
