Several weeks ago I finally fulfilled a 2003 resolution by finishing and printing a choral setting of a solo I'd written, and giving it to the choir director. Yesterday at staff she told me we'll be singing in on Good Friday! She also asked me to format it to fit a different size paper, for economical printing. I did so.... and somehow, in the process, all the bar lines disappeared! I've tried just about everything I can think of to fix it. I'll reinstall my music program and try one more time; after that, I'm afraid I'll just have to draw them in by hand on ten pages of manuscript. But we're going to sing it!!

I've been at my current church for two Lent seasons. The first year, I did a series of pieces by Bach. That worked wonderfully; it simplified my planning and practice, and both classical music lovers and others enjoyed the series. So last year I did another series, of Pachelbel's music. This year I was pondering Elgar's Vesper Chorales, or possible music by Mendelssohn... but finally realized that people seem to find baroque music more accessible, and it's easier for me as well. So today I'm printing lots of Buxtehude's organ music from a wonderful CD-ROM of baroque music. I'm also going to use the Elgar in the next few months, just not so systematically, and then some Mendelssohn over the summer.

I had to skip about 1/4 of the available Buxtehude chorale preludes because they use alto clef; I know the theory, but don't read it well enough to play from it. That still leaves me with about 200 pages of music, from which I need to select about nine short (2-3 pages) pieces.... no problem. And I have a week off to read through it all!

It's here!

The giant deluxe notebook I ordered to use as a nature journal arrived today.. and was immediately rechristened a 'fieldbook,' to limit confusion between it and my LJ. I've used LJ to put in a few 2003 entries through today's date, and will spend the next few days going back through the rest of 2003.

This is just too fun!
