Jun. 8th, 2004 09:20 pmStarted the day out with a couple of hours of practice-- recital music, stuff for Sunday, sightreading. Found a piano suite that's worth working on; it'll be fun to play it on that grand piano at Peace Temple. This Sunday is one of the rare days when I'm playing solo organ for Communion rather than leading hymns; I'm using the long Bach piece I've been working on as a challenge piece.
Later, headed south to the organ I'll be demonstrating the next two Sundays. Mrs. K., the owner, actually told me I sounded good today (she withheld comment after my first visit); that's encouraging! I actually do think it's going well. I have two complete pieces and two excerpts, about six minutes of music in all. I'm also supposed to introduce the organ and 'show' all the major stops, all within a 15 minute demo.
Finally, further south to teach all four piano lessons. Three of the kids hadn't practiced a lot, so we did coaching lessons, where they basically practiced in front of me. The fourth had fallen completely in love with one piece, and played it wonderfully. I complimented her, and then pointed out a couple of small improvements she could make, and asked if she'd be mad if I asked her to play it one more time. She grinned, said, "Nope, I love this song!" and launched right into it. Made all the corrections I'd suggested, too. Sometimes teaching is really rewarding.
