My church does a joint Easter sunrise service with an AME church; I never play for it, and this year the service was at AME. That's why, when I arrived at 7:45, I was the only staff person in the building. Problem is, at 8:28 I was still the only staff person-- and worship began at 8:30. Hubby was lector for that service, so we conferred and decided we'd start the service ourselves when folk seemed restless. Thankfully it didn't come to that, as senior pastor and one choir director arrived at 8:32.
First service went well, and actually let out early. Watched hubby's part in the drama at the 9:45 service (contemporary, I didn't play), and slipped away for a snack. The break was great, but it was hard to refocus for the 11:00 service. Result-- a few bloopers and one moment of poor judgment (I should have gone on to one more communion hymn) but overall everything was fine.
The sanctuary was decorated with helium balloons as well as the usual flowers (tulips and asters as well as lilies). The balloons looked nice, not nearly as tacky as it sounds-- but just before 11:00 a cluster came loose. They headed for a ceiling fan, and those of us who noticed thought they would be mowed down-- but instead they were sucked up through the blades, and then the ribbons tangled up thoroughly all around the fan. Someone scurried to turn the fan off, and we proceeded with the service.
Later we were chatting about how to get them down, when the chairman of trustees joined us. He told us not to worry. "We're getting in a lift this week to work on the ceiling in fellowship hall. I postponed it until now because I knew something would go wrong at Easter." And he didn't even know about the balloons!
Once we got home, the whole family worked together to make lunch-- hot turkey sandwiches and devilled eggs. I also prepped a beef roast. While I napped, hubby put the roast in. When I woke up, I added carrots and onions, then kidlet and I took a walk. When we got home, she sauteed some mushrooms while I warmed mashed potatoes I made yesterday. What a feast!
