Yes indeed, we have a functional bathroom! It has taken years, first to accumulate money and then to find the right contractor (the lovely man who did my kitchen work has retired). It was becoming increasingly urgent as we knew the shower plumbling was leaking behind the tile wall. It also took a while to get my nerve up, because I am profoundly uncomfortable with contractors in the house, and doubly so since our cat is indoor-only.

The contractor choice was complicated by my refusal to do a gut-the-room approach. The floor and walls are original tile from 1924 (subway tile from the first time it was popular!) and I wanted to preserve as much as possible. All but one contractor insisted they couldn't possibly remove the cast-iron tub without destroying the floor; so we hired the one who was willing to try. And he did it! He and a helper pried the 500-lb. tub out and dragged it outside before taking sledgehammers to it. So now we have a new clean tub, non-leaky shower with handheld sprayer and grab bars, new sink and vanity, and new tall toilet (and I keep sitting down with a *thump* on shorter public toilets). Also a new nook in which we are installing glass shelves.

We found that the medicine cabinet is also original, and was built in to survive the apocalypse-- so we are refinishing the door and keeping the cabinet. Pics once the cabinet and nook are done; but here's a teaser. I just love this sink and vanity, which give us a bit of storage without taking up tons of floor space (and the old sink was 6 inches shorter than modern standard, so it's a treat for us tall folk):

isn't it cute?

"We tend to feel that the further along the spiritual path we go, the closer we will come to some kind of pure, true self. But we don't want to accept that the other confused and seemingly impure part of us is also the true self."
