Nov. 7th, 2002 11:27 pmI’m finding that writing my novel is becoming more important to me, not just as a writing exercise, but as an attempt to explain my religious beliefs. It’s my way of responding to the discouraging election results, and the wave of intolerant conservatism, both political and religious, that seems to have prompted them. My protagonist is, like me, an extremely liberal Christian-- but she is an ordained minister who refuses to keep quiet about her true beliefs. (All too many preachers are secretly liberal but preach a more conservative line.) She pays a price, but survives and even begins to convince a few people. In the process of writing, I’m beginning to articulate my beliefs, and my frustration with conservative Christianity, more clearly than ever before. Apparently Reverend Channa Robinson is braver and more articulate than me!
