Errrr... with Hell. Felix Hell , to be specific. And it was a lot more like heaven.

Okay, okay, I attended an organ recital tonight. The recitalist was Felix Hell, who is younger than my daughter but has about ten times my talent. The evening was delightful, and amazing, and humbling. Felix played Bach passages on the pedals, faster than I think I could play them with my fingers. He bounced and romped his way through Bach that would leave me panting in a puddle of sweat. He also played some slower numbers with intense passion and meticulous phrasing.

Possibly the most impressive moment was when he dealt with a mechanical problem with the organ without losing his grip on the music. He punched a piston (a button for programming a combination of stops) in preparation for a manual change, and it obviously wasn’t what he expected. He improvised with one hand while trying a couple more pistons, and then changed the registration by hand, and continued to change all his settings by hand for that section of the piece.

I’m very good at what I do.. but my goodness, Felix is astonishing. Amazing. There aren’t words.

Felix is a cute blonde with rosy cheeks, and his English is just slightly broken-- it’s probably good that the kidlet didn’t come along!

A couple of choir members attended the recital. They assured me that, if on some future Sunday they tell me I sounded like Hell, I should take it as a compliment!
