Goals and Good Things
Apr. 22nd, 2003 11:16 pmOne of the many attractions of geocaching for me was the chance to get out and walk around without thinking about my ankle all the time. After several weeks, I found myself walking up to 2 miles without fear, and without much discomfort (though much slower than my old pace). I began toying with the idea of trying to walk a mile a day during Eastertide, as a kind of counter-Lent (I love to walk, so while it would require discipline, it would also be very very pleasant). Then I noticed LJ folk mentioning the Walk to Rivendell... and I’ve decided to try it. Not sure if I can really make it, having started a month late, but it’ll be fun trying. At this point I’ve logged 6.6 miles; a side benefit was adding a bird to my life list this morning, a Common Redpoll.
I’ve also become very determined to climb Mt. Baldy, the tallest sand dune in Warren Dunes by the end of the year (and incidentally visit the geocache and benchmarks at the top). It would be fun to make that my arrival at Rivendell but I doubt the two will coincide.
On the musical front... having composed a piece in honor of the pastor who departed last year, I feel obligated to write something for the one retiring this summer. He is classically oriented, and recently mentioned liking the responsive psalms, so I am seeking inspiration for an organ piece based on one of those psalms. Deadline is June 22, his last Sunday with us.
Another musical happening.. my oldest piano student, a very talented 11 year old boy, was quite obviously beginning to lose interest. After much searching, I finally found some ideal challenge music for him-- a book of music from the Star Wars movies, at just the right level to push him a bit. Gave that to him last week. Today, he played the page I had assigned, from the main Star Wars theme... and then said he really would rather try the Imperial theme instead, and played part of it for me. Since he had also done very good work on all his lesson materials (he is even spontaneously exploring techniques for phrasing!), I agreed to the switch. It was SO nice to teach a willing student instead of a sulky preadolescent! And he’s so very talented that I really don’t want to lose him.
