Very misty this morning. As I walk toward the river, I see a female mallard who's been lurking under the trees at the edge of the island lately. Today I see why-- there are three very young ducklings behind her. She must have bred very late!

duckies!

After walking half a mile along the river, I follow a stream up to a marshy pond. I pause to watch this lovely heron fish for a while.

From the pond, I walk up the hill to the cemetery. The bell tower is lovely, but the 'carillon' is purely electronic. It has a lovely sound, when they play only bells-- but today it is broadcasting chamber music, which is just weird. (The daily 3:00 carillon concerts always end up with an operatic version of "Amazing Grace," which sounds incredibly weird when I'm down in the park.)

I cut the back loop of the cemetery off my usual walking route because there's a funeral service in progress. As I walk away, they fire a salute and play "Taps."

Back down the hill into the park, and I encounter the goose flock. The babies have their adult markings now, and are 3/4 size or more-- but it's still the parent generation keeping watch while the youngsters graze.
