Backyard visitor

We were surprised to see a yellow shafted flicker, a type of woodpecker, on the ground.. but Sibley says "they are often seen on the ground in open areas, eating ants." (Yes, the yard looks awful.. we had drought conditions from March to July and still aren't allowed to water.)

I like how this pic shows the red on the back of the head, and the slightly hawklike legs.

Woops, it heard us!
