I was feeling trapped by the heat today, and starved for nature... so when I needed to run an errand this morning, I drove by way of one of my favorite nature spots. As soon as I opened my car door, I heard a heron croak-- and amazingly, it was flying towards me, not away!

After landing it moved near shore to fish.

I always think of red-winged blackbirds in cornfields, but in fact they nest near water and often graze on greens growing near it.

Fishing on a hot summer morning.
