kayre"NEWFANE, Vt. — A Vermont man spent several hours buried in snow Friday after trying to clear his roof.
Jean Butler, 52, of Newfane was cold but cheerful and uninjured after being rescued from snow piled up to his shoulders, according to a news release from the Vermont State Police Department.
A neighbor heard Butler’s cries for help around 3 p.m., and called the state police. When a trooper arrived, she could see only Butler’s head, shoulders and right hand sticking out of the snow, the release said.
Members of the Williamsville and NewBrook fire departments arrived soon after, and with the trooper, dug Butler out of approximately 5 to 6 feet of snow that had fallen off the roof of his garage.
He had been using a roof rake to clear snow off the garage at about 1 p.m., when the entire load of snow came down on him, according to the release.
Butler told police he intermittently called for help, but didn’t expect anyone to hear his calls."
