Best Thanksgiving in years
Nov. 24th, 2017 09:19 amThe last couple of years we've hosted a "cold turkey buffet" a day or two after Thanksgiving. This year the dates just weren't working-- and then I discovered that a dear friend would be alone on the day itself, and began to hear the same from some church members. Even Pastor Karen confessed that she had two invitations to "we don't really do Thanksgiving but you're welcome to come hang out"-- and she LOVES holidays. So we passed out invitations, and yesterday we had 10 at the table (and one cancellation). MIL is visiting, and we had three single folk, and one family whose extended family are literally on the other side of the world- they are Indian.
I wasn't feeling well early in the day, so Laura very ably stepped into the kitchen. We did most of the food, but the lovely Irene brought pies (we'll be eating pie for days). We had some worries about the turkey, which seemed very slow-- until I pulled out the fancy digital probe, and put in our old mechanical thermometer. Brand new digital had failed; at least I realized just in time. I wish I had snapped a pic of the table-- 11 completely mismatched place settings.
Most amazing was watching our beloved "Aunt" Irene playing a very creative game of Scrabble with the two children. Her patience and humor are nearly endless! I think our only failure as hosts is not providing coffee-- none of us drinks it!
