I've always been intrigued by baking, both sweets and bread. My mother didn't enjoy cooking, and didn't like me making messes in her kitchen, but occasionally I was allowed to make something from a mix.

By the time I had my own kitchen, I also was married. I experimented with baking; got good at some basic cookies and cakes, and later picked up a bread machine. I always enjoyed both the process and the results, but I didn't bake very often. Then we went through rough times a few years ago and lived in places with no dishwasher; having to clean up lots of extra dishes definitely isn't my thing.

Then we remodeled the kitchen here, and I have a wonderful new stove and dishwasher-- and I finally realized that hubby and kid tended to subtly talk me out of baking. If I mentioned making something, their first reaction was always "oooh, that'd be great!" But then they'd go on to wonder if I had time, or how much work it would be, and how much mess, and pretty soon the impulse would pass.

Once I realized this, the first thing I did was just stop telling them. For a couple of months I would bake what I wanted to, when I wanted to, and it was good. Then I told them both. Hubby immediately denied doing any such thing. Kidlet was thoughtful; and after a week or two, told me she realized I was right, and apologized.

Tonight my daughter paged through a Great British Bake Off cookbook, suggesting things she'd really like to try. I can hardly wait! But first we need to finish eating the cinnamon twist loaf, and the lemon saffron cake... :)

I'm glad you've removed an impediment to doing something you enjoy.

Did you figure out *why* they were doing it?

Hooray! I'm glad you got to the root of the issue, and look forward to your learning the magic art of gluten-free baking (hint! hint! I'm told King Arthur's makes the best one-for-one substitute out there).

(Self-involved interests aside, I am truly very glad that you are getting to grow one of your loves)
