Many thanks for the comments yesterday- it was good to connect with so many of you.

Pastor didn't have any negative comments on the rhythm instruments so that's good. I asked, "Does that mean I can go ahead with a liturgical dance with the severed head of John the Baptist this week?" (It's the lectionary gospel reading!) Alas, no. ;)

Most of you know that one of the attractions that led to our impulsive purchase of this house is that a rail trail passes by three houses away, at the end of our court. It extends about 5 miles each way. Since a year after we moved in, the portion to the east has been paved. Kid and I walk bits of it nearly every evening, and I frequently bike part of it, forming several different 5 mile loops-- but it all tends downhill away from the house, the last couple of miles at maximum railway grade. That means uphill home, which can make for a tough ride.

To the west, it was all crushed stone; a mile through a quiet neighborhood, and then a lovely 2.5 mile stretch through fields and forests, with no access points, before arriving in a neighboring town. I love walking this, but it was a bit much for my walking distance; occasionally I'd park at the beginning of the long stretch so I could walk there.

This spring they've paved it! (There's still an annoying 150 yard gap, but I can cope with either crushed stone or town street that far.) It is an absolutely glorious ride, beautiful and peaceful, and gently uphill, so I can ride until I'm tired and then have an easier ride home. The trail alone nearly doubles my usual ride, from 5 miles to 8.5; and there's potential for much longer rides, in the small town at the end and the quiet country roads beyond.

When I was young my family used to camp a lot, often off season or midweek when the campgrounds were nearly empty, and I'd spend hours biking around the quiet campground and park roads. This has much the same feeling of peace and freedom, and has been very soothing during a time when the political situation has been a bit too much for me (I have mostly tagged out for the last few days; I'll be back).

I love going on that trail when I'm in town. Last time I was there for an overnight, I went for a good long run on it. Everyone you happen to meet smiles--it's nice.

And now I have a sense of where exactly you live! (At least, I think I do...)

"Does that mean I can go ahead with a liturgical dance with the severed head of John the Baptist this week?"

Well of course not; it takes *months* for the Vatican bureaucracy to do anything involving temporary release of their artifacts.
