I had a double adventure last night.

Last year I was taking casual lessons in jazz/classical guitar from Dan at church-- he's a professor of engineering, and an amazing guitarist. He hasn't taught much guitar, and I'm a bit of a challenging student-- advanced musical knowledge, but much less experience on guitar than he thought. He kept trying to skip massive steps, and I'd have to tell him that my head understands but my hands need to work on it for a while! Eventually he gave me a suggestion that helped me figure out how to move forward, but I've been working on my own for a long time.

Last night we got together at church. I showed him what I've been working on, and we worked out some new 'assignments' together. We were able to play some duets together, which was fun. When we were winding down he started sightreading some music that was lying around, so I pulled out a song I'm currently in love with. He started sightreading, and after a while I started backing him with chords, first strummed and then fingerpicked. THAT was magical; with both of us working from our strengths, good music happened really easily.

Then there was a pounding at the main door. Without Dan I probably wouldn't have answered so late at night, but I did-- it was a police officer! Turned out neighbors had reported a man lurking around outside twice that evening, and the man had written an odd and frightening message in chalk on the sidewalk by our secondary entrance. He assured me they had investigated, wanted us to know not to be freaked out by the message- and suggested that we should rinse it off in the morning.

Wow! There is no better magic than magics of cooperation and synchrony, and music is their classroom as well as their terrain.*

Of course I want to know the message. :D

* Of course, so is hockey. :D

The musical conversation sounds awesome.

The other... not so much!

Brain-knowledge and muscle-knowledge are very different. I'm glad you've found a way to progress!
