The current normal
Apr. 19th, 2020 09:36 pmMy church is not holding in-person worship, which means some big changes to my job. I still organize music for our pre-recorded online worship, but that's much less music than usual. To my surprise, my time is being taken up by.... becoming what passes for the church Zoom expert. First we had to figure out how to have emergency committee meetings, then small group meetings. Now we're holding Zoom watch parties on Sunday morning, complete with 'coffee hour' breakout groups; and we're looking at the possibility of using Zoom to record our readers each week. It has been a steep learning curve!
Last week I realized we had a number of older folk who desperately want to get to the Zoom events, and hadn't been doing enough to help them. I spent the week organizing helpers to phone most of them and then hold one-on-one Zoom meetings to teach them how to navigate the program. Two people got careful home visits. This morning all of our 'lost' made it online except one who hadn't been able to get a loaned device onto her facility's internet yet; and one couple could see and hear but not the reverse. At least they all now know that we care enough to work with them.
Not the ministry I expected to be doing.
