When I was small, my mom cut my hair in a page boy style. Boys got buzz cuts, my sister and I got page boys. She eventually got switch to a bob instead. Summer after 5th grade, we found out I needed glasses. I sensed my mom's sympathy and tearfully asked if I could at least grow my hair out, and it worked. I started middle school with a whole new look-- shoulder length hair, glasses and braces.

In 9th grade the shag haircut was all the rage. All my friends were getting the layered style, just brushing their shoulders. I even went along when one got her long hair, much like mine, cut into the new style. So I told my mom I wanted a shag cut.

She poured so much scorn on the very idea that I wanted to melt into the floor. It wouldn't flatter me; I'd regret it before they finished cutting. That kind of style would take expensive maintenance. And if I wanted to grow it out, I'd look ridiculous for a very long time, growing out all those layers. I didn't get it cut; in fact I wore it waist length until I was 30; and that cut really was a disaster, and i grew it out again. Mom died when I was 33. A few years later I started getting my hair cut, a little shorter each time, eventually going quite short. A couple of years ago (2? 3?) I started dyeing it purple, and really loved my hair for the first time.

Now, thanks to Covid-19, I haven't had a haircut for more than 3 months-- and I basically now have that shag haircut I dreamed about (in purple). And I am really enjoying it! I could probably get a cut safely now, but I'm not going to for a while. I'm going to enjoy my shaggy style, and maybe even a little purple pony tail before I cut it all off again.

:) Pictures, please?

I had quite the shag in the 80s, but it does require strictly maintaining a 6-week haircut schedule.

These days I get my hair cut once a year in "long layers." :) Of course, the hair salons shut down about a month before I usually get it done.

And so glad you are able to finally have what you want... though I am really sorry it took a pandemic to get you there!
