Oct. 15th, 2021 08:10 amPiano student Dylan auditioned for jazz band recently. I knew he would make it. Jazz bands frequently have more than one pianist to share the load, because the parts are fundamentally more difficult than the instrumental parts (multiple notes in odd chords, instruments only have to read one note); all 3 of last year's pianists moved up to high school.
He did make it... and after their first practice, the teacher/director asked him to accompany choir as well, and handed him a big stack of music!
Dylan is thrilled, and clearly excited about playing with groups. I'm concerned about him getting overwhelmed, and have suggested maybe just one choir song. We're having an extra lesson tomorrow to look over all the music.
A fun perk of this for me is that he is emailing me directly-- I'm cautious about email with students but have had permission from his parents for a while. He actually told me first about making jazz band-- his parents learned it from me!
