So I finally had my first Sunday at my new church. Even before I was hired, this Sunday was planned as a special service in honor of a couple that made a huge bequest to the church (the list of projects it has funded is amazing, and I'm pretty sure it's at least partly funding my salary); their children were visiting. Among other things, that bequest provided new hymnals (the edition I've been using for 7 years, thank goodness)-- so they wanted to do a hymn sing. They did at least choose hymns in advance rather than calling them out on the spot but there were 10 or more hymns, several new to me other than having sightread them once.

It went fine. No false modesty here; I am good at what I do. One of the hymns wasn't as strong as I would have liked. I had one point when I hit an incorrect control-- but I'm truly amazed that only happened once. I had to adjust a few settings on the fly, and was able to; I'm glad I started practicing there last month. Everyone I talked to was warm and welcoming and impressed. And it was all so fun! It's so satisfying to play an instrument with so much more potential; and wonderful beyond words to be out of the stress of the last year.

You would be able to handle them picking things on the fly because you are that good, but I am very glad that they had the good sense to recognize that they shouldn't. :-)
