New patterns
Feb. 6th, 2022 09:03 pmI changed from one job to another with nearly identical job descriptions. I knew the details would be entirely different, but the difference in the patterns of daily life is a bit unexpected.
The commute is the obvious part-- 20 minutes compared to 5. Also the drive takes me near quite a lot of shopping, and there's more temptation to run errands after practice. The longer drive plus those errands means leaving the house earlier. I've also gone back to my Vermont habit of making a quart of tea in the morning, so I can carry a thermos and top off my tea all day.
The surprise difference between churches is that new pastor works Mondays, and takes Friday-Saturday as his weekend. Every pastor I've worked with before has taken off Monday (and either Tuesday or Saturday). This basically moves the church work week up a day; the bulletin has to be entirely complete Thursday, not Friday. This pushes me to do more work earlier in the week too.
And then there's my other job-- teaching. I lost one student in the switch, but gained 4 new students! That takes me from 6 students to 9. I'm teaching one at my new church, and the others all at the old, and currently am teaching on 4 different days rather than 3. (And I adore them all, but will not take any more unless there's a compelling reason.)
Bottom line: I feel crazy BUSY, and am using a lot of energy to keep organized and on top of everything. But I love the atmosphere at the new church, so it's all worth it!

Date: 2022-02-07 03:07 am (UTC)Wow, four new students! This all sounds great, and I'm sure you'll settle into a pattern that works before too long.
For me, a difference between a 5-minute commute and a 20-minute commute would be that on the latter it's more practical to listen to music or shorter podcasts. (Unless you're bicycling, in which case you probably shouldn't be using headphones/earbuds on the road.)
