Jun. 19th, 2023 08:59 pmtl/dr- Church music job is going fine. Dulcimer is FUN!
So, my new(ish) church job (18 months) is going great. I've just completed my first full year with the choir. It's a small group of older folk, but they are dedicated and talented and really have done some amazing stuff. I've learned to pedal the organ with my limited left foot well enough that I think only another organist would notice my limits. And the church is appreciative and friendly and supportive. After my year of hell during the pandemic, it's still wonderful to be happy on my way to church, and afterwards as well.
And then there's hammered dulcimer. After gently learning the basics and playing for relaxation for two years, three things have happened. 1) I realized I'm capable of being very very good at it. 2) I realized I'd really like to do that. And 3) I've figured out how to do that and located the resources I need.
In February I signed up for 6 hours of online workshops in a virtual event called QuaranTune. That was my first time directly interacting with other players. Tremendously fun, and showed me that in folk music circles I'm already an advanced player. There was another QuaranTune two weeks ago, and now I've assembled a full set of lessons and a list of players to follow for inspiration. I'm playing an hour a day and loving it! (Videos soon, probably.)
