Reclaiming play

kayreI've always had an itch to draw or paint, but perfectionism gets in the way when I try. For my birthday this year, I bought myself a set of art markers and a couple of sketchbooks. The markers are paint-like and can be layered, but each layer needs to dry. Turns out it's perfect for letting me just play with color. I've got them in my room, and several times a day I make just a few quick marks on a page and walk away. I'm doing simple little doodles but with lots of color, and it takes up to 4 days to fill a page, and I love it! No masterpieces in the forecast but it's FUN!

Musically, for the last few years hammered dulcimer has been my for-fun music. I like the music I play professionally, but it is work, and lately it has felt like I was just grinding it out, so I built in some play-time for learning some new music without being on a deadline. Serendipitously, in-person worship has been cancelled two Sundays in a row, which means I'm now more caught up on necessary music than usual, and can spare the time for the fun stuff.
