Looks like we had a pileated woodpecker in the yard for quite a while in the last 24 hours-- because this trunk wasn't in this condition when the kid and I walked down there Saturday. I'm sure the downies and hairies are helping, but it takes a pileated to do this much damage that quickly.





Other returning wildlife-- Canada geese.



And my very first great blue heron of the year, right in my backyard!
