I didn’t play well this morning-- worst I’ve done at this church. Well, okay, I blew one piece-- but nobody had any doubt that I blew it. Had a minor technical problem with the organ (electronic organs are NOT supposed to have tuning problems, but this one occasionally fails to create a clean pedal tone, and I literally couldn’t hear whether I was playing the right notes or not) and that distracted me so much, I never did really pull it together. But my hymn accompanying went well, as did the trumpet part I added to the choir anthem, and offertory and postlude were fine. Second service I reversed pieces, playing my planned postlude as prelude and vice versa, so that I wouldn’t have to attempt the piece I botched when folk were playing close attention. It went better but still not well.
Just the one piece, though, right? Overall I still did well. And most people are probably no more freaked over my troubles than over the pastor forgetting the end of a story when he was halfway through it, right? So I’ll plan comfortable pieces for next week (necessary, since I’m traveling), build my confidence back up a bit, and move on. But it was awfully frustrating.
