cattle egret on fence

I'm having a moment of local fame-- this is a cattle egret. They are relatively rare, and seldom seen in this area except in one spot, so imagine my delight at seeing one 20 miles from that spot!

They're not at all afraid of cattle, and in fact will hop on their backs to eat insects-- which the cattle appreciate!

How cool! I've never even heard of a cattle egret. I'm glad to get to see one, even if it's just in pictures.

Is it that they're uncommon so far north? They're pretty common (as in flocks-of-them common) in coastal Texas.

Pretty fellows aren't they?
We don't, to my knowledge, have them out here.
