Last night Luther, my co-organist, asked if we could swap practice times because his wife had medical appointments. So I headed off a bit earlier than usual, to practice in the morning and finish up by 1:00. I did so, and after a late lunch I headed off to do some shopping. About 3:00 I missed a phone call on my cell phone, unknown number but local area code. I had a bad feeling so I returned the call. It was Luther. This morning his wife was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It is a terrible diagnosis, and my heart is breaking for them.
The immediate issue was that Luther was scheduled to play for our evening service tonight, so of course I told him I'd fill in (and this Sunday as well). That left me with a small dilemma-- dinner! The church holds soup suppers before the Advent services, but with the current state of my allergies, I really can't eat anything I don't cook. So I dashed into a grocery store and came out with: 3/4 lbs of stew beef, 2 quarts of (safe) beef broth, 2 cans of white beans, and veggies from the salad bar: carrots, peas, celery and onion. Happens I had already stopped at a natural food store for a safe butter substitute. Also grabbed a bag of safe tortilla chips so I could have something cracker-like.
I arrived at the church intending to start soup, and interrupt my practice every 15 minutes to stir it, but met my friend Wayne on the doorstep. Wayne's an excellent cook, and was planning to just hang out and tend his own soup for the next two hours, so I begged him to make mine, and quickly filled him in on what I planned. He was kind enough to take over for me, and it really came out quite well! I'm doubly glad I made the effort, since the other church member with similar allergies was also present.
