Pics from Champlain Canal

I walked along the old Champlain Canal today, and was astonished to see a total of 9 green backed herons.

Trivia-- this is the canal on which the protagonist of Twelve Years a Slave worked, and I was walking about 10 miles from his home.





I didn't know they would glean for insects in a tree, but I guess they do!



I think these are fading blossoms of burdock-- just the pistils or stamens, after the petals have fallen.



Milkweed seeds.

Beautiful little herons; what a treat to have seen so may in one outing!

I love that first milkweed one -- something about the thin white wisps against the foliage behind them really stands out.
