Passing the time until my dinner date...

1. What kind(s) of music do you listen to regularly? Does it change at all depending on your mood or the moods of those around you (like playing upbeat music as a motivator)? Classical, Celtic, New Age, folk, pop, big band, Christian of various sorts... what did I miss? Certainly it changes-- quiet music at night, upbeat for housework, etc.

2. Do you listen to the radio (NPR and other talk radio, too, not just music stations) or CDs/audiobooks more while in the car? What do you consider to be good "driving music"? Any particular bands, songs or albums that seem to make long trips go faster? I mostly listen to NPR. My CD player isn’t reliable, and neither is my driving if I get too involved in music.

3. Anymore, a lot of concert performances sound close to their professionally recorded counterparts. Do you thing this is true to some extent? Why or why not? Which do you prefer - live music or recorded music? Why? Under ideal conditions, live performance. There’s a magic that happens live that just doesn’t happen as often with recorded music, even if it’s recorded in live performance. That said, recorded music is convenient, and having control of the volume is a Good Thing. (This is a bit of a hot button for me, as recorded music invades the church. Occasional use of a CD I can understand-- my church occasionally does slideshows, most recently of the youth mission trip, with recorded music as background. But why would anyone use a recorded accompaniment when there’s a good accompanist available? /end rant)

4. With the abundance of music available to download, and the tools to make CDs on your own, how often do you actually buy CDs? Is there any artist or group that you prefer buying their CDs instead of downloading/burning a copy? What was the last CD you bought? I don’t have a CD burner, and I’m not thrilled with the quality of sound I can get over the computer, so I still buy CDs-- one or two a month. Most recent, I think, is Mendelssohn’s “Elijah.”

5. We all have maybe one similar music interest as our parents, especially if we grew up in a home where music was played often. So, 'fess up - what artist/group do both you and your parents like? Why do you like them? Also, do your parents like anything you listen to? My father loved bagpipes and marching bands, both of which I enjoy, though not as much as him. I still love the pop songs of the 1930s and 1940s, which I learned from my mother’s music collection. She also loved classical music, but didn’t listen to it during my childhood; her career as a classical violinist (2nd chair in Cincinnati Symphony) was ended by an accident, and I think she couldn’t bear to listen to what she could no longer play. When I finally began playing classical organ, she started listening to classical music on the radio, and her comments on what we heard together taught me a great deal about fundamental musicianship.

Footnote #1-- the accident was a fall from a horse; broke her shoulder and did nerve damage. I’ve often wondered what she would think about the kidlet’s riding.
Footnote #2-- Someone recently asked me what I would wish for if I could have one wish, and it couldn’t be either “world peace” or “piles of money.” I replied, almost without thinking, “a recording of my Mom playing the violin.”
