odds and ends
Sep. 21st, 2002 02:27 pmMy postlude tomorrow is Buxtehude’s Jig Fugue (aka Gigue Fugue). I learned this as a student, but have never performed it; I’m still a bit intimidated by very fast flashy stuff, and this thing just never stops! (For my non-organist friends, imagine Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring played at a fast dance tempo, for an approximation of the challenge.) I find myself thinking of it as something of a musical joke-- it sounds so much like a couple of fiddlers deciding to play until the dancers drop (sounds like they succeed, too).
On the way to the stable on Thursday, kidlet and I stopped to watch a flock of about 20 wild turkeys cross the road in front of us and climb the embankment beside the road. On the way home, a deer crossed in front of us at the same spot. Have I mentioned lately how much I like living here?
Went shopping today. Loot: one barstool for the kitchen (so kidlet and I can both sit down while we cook; 5 cans of Ghirardeli cocoa mix (might possibly last until Christmas); one book of easy Christmas carols for my mother-in-law, who is relearning piano after many years away; and 4 packets of reward stickers for my piano kiddies. They have made it quite clear that stickers with planes and trucks and such are for “little kids” (bear in mind these kids range from 6 to 10), so I bought more of their beloved “blob” stickers. Abstract is in with these kids!
Much to my delight, I’ve been invited to speak at my old church for Laity Sunday next month. It will be fun to go back. I’m hoping all three of my piano students can do duets with me for the offertory (they are all members there). I’m already working on a program of hymns for All Saint’s Day at my current church, and think I adapt that to fit the laity theme.
