A bit over three years ago, my husband was job-hunting. We were hoping to move back to Ohio, and a company made him an offer in Dayton, but they also offered him a research and design job here in St. Joseph. Every time he talked about that offer, he was transformed-- his eyes would light up, he’d lean forward and gesture with his hands. It was pretty obvious we weren’t going to move back to Ohio.

Tonight, I watched a similar transformation. The kidlet will turn 18 soon, and graduate all too soon after that, and has been pondering plans for the future. She had her first job offer recently, for a month of office work in June after graduation. When she got the offer, I commented idly that if she took the money she’d earn then, and any cash graduation gifts, she might have enough money to start thinking about buying a car of her own, or a project horse-- an untrained horse or pony to train and resell.

Tonight at dinner, she asked what minimum wage is.. and how much she’d have to work to afford board for a project horse. We did the math, and figured that about 50 hours of work per month would probably cover it (less if she worked the rest of the summer), and be pretty manageable with a light load of college classes. And as she talked about the possibilities, I saw that same light in her eyes and heard the excitement in her voice. I’m not sure how it will all work out, but it’s wonderful seeing light up with enthusiasm and hope that way.

NaNoWriMo stuff: 1948 words today, 5901 total. Not bad, when I wasn’t sure I’d manage anything at all today.
