Feb. 9th, 2003 02:23 pmChurch went much better than I expected today. My music went well despite the fact that I felt a bit insecure about it. I did spontaneously skip the hardest 8 bars of my offertory when I saw that the ushers were done taking the collection.
At the end of second service I noticed that my left organ shoe felt loose. That’s the foot with the injured ankle; months ago I had to loosen the ankle strap 3 notches because of all the swelling. I tightened it back up two notches, and left it there for the rest of the morning. Definite progress!
Our senior pastor announced this morning that he’s retiring effective July 1. This could be either good or bad, both for the church and for me personally. The church could certainly use someone with new ideas, so I think it’s likely the switch will be good overall. But a pastor who is totally sold on contemporary music could cost me my job-- in a Methodist church, the pastor has complete authority over the worship service, though in practice they generally accept the congregation’s wishes for the most part. (I don’t hate contemporary worship, but my skills just aren’t as suited for that style.)
Of course, there’s nothing I can do but wait-- so I guess I should be hunting for some big impressive music for Gene’s last Sunday (he loves the bigger Bach pieces) and for the new pastor’s first Sunday.
