Jul. 7th, 2003 11:43 pmThe park where the kidlet and I do most of our walking sits along the river, under a bluff. One creek comes out of the woods, crosses the entry road, and then broadens into a pond about 50 feet wide before narrowing again and entering the river.
June was so dry here that the pond had dried up entirely; there was only a narrow trickle of water leading to the river. Plants have been growing in the muddy bottom, and are now knee-high in places. We've especially enjoyed noticing the path left by a big turtle, who apparently makes a daily trek from the woods to the river. In the wetter spots, there'll be an 8 inch wide trench filled with water; at the drier spots, a double row of tracks with swooshy tailmarks down the middle.
It rained most of yesterday and today, and now there are pools of water scattered on the pond bottom. It's supposed to rain for the rest of the week, so we should have our pond back soon. I'll be glad to see the herons and muskrats and other critters return-- but I'll rather miss the turtle tracks.
(The rains have also dispelled some concern about the condition of our roof, so I'm content tonight, despite the fact that our air conditioner isn't working.)
