Serendipity
Jul. 11th, 2003 11:53 pmHad to drive my niece to central Indiana today, to meet her mom halfway home. Naturally I visited http://www.geocaching.com/ beforehand, and took along a stack of information sheets on caches and benchmarks along the way.
Halfway to our destination, there was a cache near the highway, and a benchmark within 1/2 mile of it. I missed the parking spot for the cache, so I drove on to the benchmark location-- a former ME (Methodist Episcopal) Church. It's now United Methodist, as the ME were one of the three denominations that united in 1968.
I was frustrated to see that an addition had been built at the front of the church, covering the benchmark location. Peering in the new entry doors, I could see that the original outside brick was visible in the new foyer, but I couldn't see the benchmark disk because of the angle.
Just as I was ready to give up, a car pulled into the parking lot next to mine, and a woman about my age got out. I explained what I was doing there, and she immediately responded, "Sure, there's a disk right in here.. do you geocache too?" Turns out she's a new geocacher, and had just recently figured out what the disk was.
And what was she doing at the church?
She's the organist. Yup, I managed to encounter another United Methodist geocaching organist!
