I'm in trouble now.....
Aug. 8th, 2003 10:31 pmThe kidlet and I have often seen deer tracks in our favorite park, but never a deer. I went walking by myself, and went on the woods trails just before sunset. I wasn't more than 100 yards from the road when I heard something big in the underbrush near the trail, and turned in time to see a whitetail bounding away.
Later, walking along the narrow channel of water beside the island, I saw ripples and tracked them to their source-- a baby muskrat, about 9 inches long, nibbling on plants at the water's edge about 10 feet from me. Later I think I startled a full-grown muskrat; I could see BIG ripples, and the leading-edge wave by something's head, but it didn't surface where I could see. The water at that spot was too shallow for a beaver, though.
Comic moment of the night was when I walked by a bank of six trash cans, and six raccoon heads popped in sequence. Five jumped out and skittered away; the last just stared at me and kept eating his french fries.
