Oct. 14th, 2003 11:58 amI must be hooked on walking-- did 2 miles this morning in the park, in chilly rain. Not many animals crazy enough to be out, except for a few squirrels, but we did have one neat moment. We heard several crows calling out in a treetop. When we spotted them, we saw that one would occasionally swoop through the middle of the tree. The third swooping crow flushed out a hawk, and the whole group joined in to chase the hawk several hundred yards away.
We're right on the margin of year-round territory for several of the birds we enjoy watching, including blue herons and belted kingfishers. Several herons are still in the area, but I hadn't seen or heard a kingfisher for several weeks, until this morning. A couple of days ago I had one of those horribly frustrating moments. I was watching two herons fishing, when they suddenly had a brief territory fight-- and the moment I lifted my camera, the batteries died. Silly me, I'm using rechargeables... I don't have to wait until they die before replacing them!
I did catch two quick photos of a hawk I spotted in the woods, which assured me that I'm starting to develop a photographer's habits. Twice in my life I've witnessed truly fascinating events-- and realized afterwards that I had a camera hanging around my neck and never thought of it. (More pics on the way very soon-- some migratory birds, and really cool mushrooms.)
