kayreI often joke that "I don't cook, I just load appliances." Today was one of those days-- French bread in the bread machine, Goulash in the crock pot, and off I went to my book club meeting. When I got home, I smelled the delightful odors of the bread and goulash, and an odd chemical smell. Rushing to the kitchen, I discovered that the bottom of the crockpot had melted; one leg had collapsed, allowing the heating unit to contact and burn my countertop.
Ironically enough, I had set the bread machine on a glass cutting board, but neglected to rearrange things to put the crockpot on the other such board.
Please, PLEASE, always put self-contained cooking appliances on a heat-resistant, flameproof board, especially if you'll be leaving them unattended!
