Jan. 24th, 2004 10:00 pmThe river on Wednesday... standing on the bank, I could hear a soft swishing sound, almost like an animal in the dried grass, as the lumps of ice and slush collided.
Today... I had never really thought about the impact of water expanding as it freezes, on a big scale. As
rabbit tracks.. the first I've seen in a while
Deer tracks.. also the first recent signs
Fox tracks.. I couldn't be more sure if I'd actually seen the fox. The tracks emerged from the marsh, walked the length of the pond on the ice... jumped up to shore, then went out on the river ice and rambled along 50 feet out for about .3 of a mile before returning to shore and heading across a bare field. All of this without a human track in parallel anywhere, and it had the characteristic straight-line trot track.
