Yesterday, after a night of freezing rain and snow, with more snow falling, all the public school systems in the area stayed open. Today, with no fresh snow and little predicted, they all closed. The roads are still bad, but much improved from yesterday. Go figure.

Walking around the park was a challenge, with knee-high drifts in place. There were many deer and fox tracks on the trails. There was one wild canine track too large to be a red fox, large even for a silver fox-- probably a coyote. In one part of the park there are two distinct game trails visible in the snow, formed by both deer and fox. They lead from a sheltered creekbed to the deep brush on the south edge of the marsh, confirming my hunch that those areas provide the best winter cover for deer. I'm resisting the temptation to follow the trails because I don't want to disturb the deer-- and my footprints would increase the temptation for other people after me.
