Feb. 1st, 2004 07:46 pmThe temperature reached 32F here for the first time in weeks. I decided to take a nice quick walk, sticking to the roads in the cemetery and park; with the higher temperature, and staying off the trails, I didn't figure I needed footwarmers today.
Saw a few neat bird and animal tracks in the cemetery. Headed down to the park-- decided to take the middle road through the main area. I don't usually take that road, since it goes through cleared fields, rather than next to woods or river. It's nice for watching flying birds, and scanning for hawks, though.
A large bird flew across the field, but it wasn't a hawk. It was black, with white under the wings, and made an odd call something like a small dog yelping after being stepped on. It was duck-sized, and I thought it might be one of the black and white duck species I've seen lately-- until it landed on a tree near the river and started moving like a woodpecker.
I went floundering across the field to the river road, 100 yards through snow up to my knees. But I got pics of a pileated woodpecker, only the third time I've ever seen one! (Truly duck-sized, much larger than a bluejay.. about 6 inches from back of head to tip of beak) (on further examination... it's a female)
