I didn't see the bulletin for today's services until yesterday. When I did, I was horrified.. it had the worst imaginable transition at one point. The choir anthem is a lovely piece, sweet and solemn... and I was to follow immediately after that with my very light, fluffy, happy little offertory. The only thing I could do was point out the flow problem to my pastor and beg him to talk for a while in between. (I also needed time to get from the choir to the organ and get settled comfortably.)

The anthem went beautifully, and left a quiet hush in the sanctuary. The pastor started out talking about the quiet joy in the music, and expanded on the joy of our faith for a while, then introduced the offering.

Once a month we take a double offering; the regular brass plates for ordinary offerings, and a loose coin offering for local charities. The loose coins are collected separately-- in coffee cans. The sound of coins dropping into those cans is rather distracting sometimes!

The flully little offertory is almost a polka, very bouncy and with some obvious places to clap. Partway through, someone bounced one of the coffee can at the clapping points... and someone else did so at the next point... and we did the whole offertory with whoever had the cans adding percussion. It was delightfully funny... and absolutely wonderful that in a church that's having more than the usual struggles with pledges falling short of budget, collecting the offering was fun today.
