While I was walking along the riverbank, I saw a small bird in a clear area among the grasses. It let out a surprised squawk, and there was an incredible thrashing through the grass until Mama Mallard emerged and chased the little one back under cover.
Later I found the park gaggle of goslings napping, with five of the six adults standing guard. Riverview Cooperative Day Care!
The geese are residents of a park in Buchanan, Michigan.. not sure what variety they are. According to My Sister the Naturalist, the left goose is a Toulouse, the right probably a Chinese, both domestic breeds,
I found a nice three-mile route around all my favorite spots, for days when I have time for a longer walk. I really fade just past the two-mile point, I think I've programmed my body to do just two miles!
Oh, and just because it's cute....
