These are my notess on the first three days of The Purpose Driven Life. These first few days are rather sketchy, as I wasn't writing with sharing them in mind, and don't have a lot of time to go back and fill in (though I did add a bit where they were totally incomprehensible). I'm looking forward to some discussion here, so don't hold back!

Day 1-- Summary: It’s not about you-- the purpose of our lives is God’s purpose, not our own.

How is Warren distinguishing between purpose and other choices, like career and marriage? If “you may choose your career, your spouse, your hobbies...” is your Purpose more than just another hobby?

Worship isn’t about us, either.

Day 2--Summary: Everything about you was planned, designed deliberately.

Very predestinationist again. Did God “pre-plan” rape babies? AIDS babies? Cocaine babies? The quote at the top of 24 is a very broad paraphrase. So is the second-- ‘firstfruits’ doesn’t mean ‘most important.’ “God is love” is only part of a sentence. Can’t we believe God made us, loves us, without believing he micromanages every aspect of life? If he does, I guess we have no choice about reading this book. God allows suffering to shape us? Within reason, okay, but that’s hard to stomach for real horror stories.

Day 3-- Most common driving forces behind how people live: guilt, anger, fear, materialism, need for approval. Benefits of purpose-driven living: Gives meaning to life; simplifies life; focuses your life; motivates your life; prepares you for eternity.

Interprets Cain’s exile as self-imposed, rather than God-imposed. Quote from Job 5:2-- “To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing.” TEV. In the NIV: “Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.” Quite a difference! Isaiah 49:4 attributed to Isaiah, but the speaker is either the Messiah or Israel personified. Job 7:6-- again, paraphrase is very broad. Use of Proverbs 13:7 paraphrase is clearly prooftexting; the original verse is about deceit, not about the value of a simple life. Another broad paraphrase of Philippians 3:15. “You were put here to prepare for eternity.” Not supported by scripture. Romans 14:10-12-- he skips 11, which makes it clear that the passage is about not judging others, rather than simply a threat of judgment. Chapter ends with heavy threats of judgment, and emphasis on Jesus rather than on God.
