Purpose Driven Life notes
Jun. 12th, 2004 09:31 pmSummary: Life in eternity is far more important than our earthly lives. Only two choices: heaven or hell. “There are eternal consequences to everything you do on earth.”
My thoughts: Very interesting that at one point he quotes Paul quoting Isaiah, rather than quoting Isaiah directly.
I believe that “the Kingdom is now;” that eternity has already begun. I do believe in an afterlife, but in a God who is eager to bring us in, not looking for excuses to keep us out. I am only one tiny point away from universalism; I think the only damned will be those who, in full knowledge and understanding, reject God. (Gulley’s book Amazing Grace basically argues that that’s such an insane choice, God will heal those people so they’ll make the other choice.)
Heaven and hell preaching leads to living life in fear; knowing that any silly mistake could lead to eternal damnation. I don’t want any part of a god who would want us to live that way.
